Companies extend Ark. well closures amid quakes

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) -- Two natural gas exploration companies have agreed to extend the shutdowns of Arkansas injection wells as researchers study whether the operations are linked to recent earthquake activity.

The Arkansas Oil and Gas Commission says Chesapeake Energy and Clarita Operating asked to postpone a hearing on the shutdowns until April 26.

The panel had ordered the wells temporarily shut down on March 4. The companies had been expected to present testimony to the commission on March 29.

The commission's deputy director and general counsel says the panel was going to request that the wells remained shut down at the March 29 meeting. Shane Khoury says both companies then requested a continuance on the hearing until April.

The commission agreed on the condition that the wells remain closed until that time.
