Taxpayer Alliance President speaks in Wausau

WAUSAU (WAOW) -- The head of the state's taxpayers alliance spoke in Wausau, highlighting what's at stake for Wisconsin residents if the budget passes.

It calls for major cuts to municipal governments and school districts.  Todd Berry, the President of the Wisconsin Taxpayers Alliance, says under the proposed budget bill that money can't be made up through tax increases.

Where the money will come from though is still in question.

Berry says, "One thing you cannot generalize about Wisconsin with 3,000 units of government and thousands of local unions and so forth is that you can generalize.  Because you won't be able to.  I suspect we'll see, like we did two years ago when the school aids were cut, we'll see some schools with more money.  We'll see others with a lot less."

He says that's because districts and government leaders can put a referendum on the ballot, asking voters for property tax increases.

He believes the state legislature will tweak the budget so the pinch of cuts is felt all around.
