Wis. chancellors oppose plan to split UW System

Milwaukee (AP) -- Thirteen University of Wisconsin chancellors want state lawmakers to endorse a new plan that would give all UW schools more autonomy but wouldn't spin off UW-Madison from the rest of the UW System.

The chancellors sent a letter Wednesday to state legislators, who'll be evaluating the 2011-13 budget bill put forth by Gov. Scott Walker.

Walker's proposal would allow UW-Madison, the system's flagship college, to separate from the system. UW-Madison Chancellor Biddy Martin supports the idea, saying it would give the school the flexibility it needs to compete against the nation's other top schools.

But the other chancellors say the plan would weaken the whole UW System. They suggest that all UW schools be given more autonomy in a way that doesn't fragment the system.
