State to recognize Medal of Honor recipients

MADISON (AP) -- Wisconsin residents who have received the Medal of Honor will be honored on Friday.

The Medal of Honor is the highest military award for bravery. It has been awarded to 61 Wisconsin residents.

Setting aside a day to recognize Medal of Honor recipients was passed by the Legislature last year.

The Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs says that the state Veterans Museum in Madison has three Medals of Honor in its possession.

The three awards held by the museum were all given posthumously.

They went to Wausau native Lt. Jerome Sudut and Hatfield native Cpl. Mitchell Red Cloud, Jr., for bravery during the Korean War and Fort Atkinson native Staff Sgt. Gerald Endl of Fort Atkinson for heroics during World War II.
