Students at Jefferson Elementary School in Merrill got their blood pumping on Thursday.

3rd, 4th, and 5th graders participated in their annual "Jump Rope for Heart" event. Students took pledges from friends and families before they jumped to their hearts' content.

4th grade teacher Karla Kroll explains the importance of this event.

"In the last four years, we raised over $26,000 for the American Heart Association, which for a school our size is just fantabulous," Kroll says."The Heart Association tells us it's approximately $50 to save a life, so the kids were really excited today to find out that means 460 lives."

Newsline 9's Justin Loew and I joined in on the fun, doing as many jumps as we could in 30 seconds. Justin finished with 84, while I finished with 61.

We both promise to return next year.
