Recycling groups make case to keep programs

MADISON (AP) -- More than 150 Wisconsin cities, counties, businesses and other organizations have joined forces to try and save funding for recycling programs.

Republican Gov. Scott Walker wants to eliminate the requirement that a municipality or county run solid waste recycling programs.  He also wants to divert state aid for such programs to other economic development efforts.  The idea has drawn opposition from cities and counties as well as at least four Republican lawmakers who say the program should remain.

A letter sent to Walker and state lawmakers this week put together by four pro-recycling organizations says recycling plays a significant role in Wisconsin's economy and recycling programs should be a high priority for the state.
