Official warn Wis. farmers about atrazine rules

Madison (AP) -- The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture is reminding famers about the state's restrictions on the use of the herbicide atrazine.

Agriculture Department official Stan Senger says Friday that there are 101 atrazine prohibition areas in the state covering 1.2 million acres of land, which includes parts of the lower Wisconsin riverway.

The prohibition areas are established when the level of atrazine in private wells exceeds a certain threshold.

Senger says farmers need to check the label on the products they are using and not rely on the product's name. He says many "premix" herbicides contain atrazine even though you wouldn't know it from the product name.
