Embattled Wis. Veterans secretary Black resigns

MADISON (AP) -- Wisconsin's embattled Veterans Affairs Secretary Ken Black is resigning.

Black announced on Monday that he is resigning effective Friday.

Black was appointed in November 2009 after the board fired then-Secretary John Scocos.

Former employees of the agency filed complaints against Black, who is African American, saying he was trying to purge the agency of older white workers. Black has denied the accusations.

As recently as December the state Department of Veterans Affairs' board that appoints the secretary was considering launching a national search for a secretary.

Black said in a statement Monday that he was honored to serve the department and he believes everything that can be possibly done to support them should be pursued.
