Former Wis. Rep. Steve Hilgenberg dies at age 66

DODGEVILLE, Wis. (AP) -- Former Wisconsin Assemblyman Steve Hilgenberg (HIL'-jin-berg) has died of cancer at age 66.

His wife says the Dodgeville Democrat died on Sunday.

Hilgenberg represented southwest Wisconsin's 51st District for two terms. He was first elected in 2006 but declined to run again in 2010, citing health concerns.

Hilgenberg attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison before enlisting in the Army in 1966. Later he started a printing business.

His wife, Mary Mayo, tells The Associated Press the community loved her husband because he was a genuine, approachable man who cared about people. She says he adored his two grandsons and enjoyed life's simple pleasures.

Gov. Scott Walker says he was saddened to hear of Hilgenberg's death. The Democratic Party of Wisconsin remembered him as a strong advocate for small-business owners and veterans.
