Ohio House panel OKs public worker union bill

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- A House committee in Ohio has approved a measure to limit union bargaining rights for 350,000 public workers.

The vote Tuesday sent the bill to the full House. It happened as several hundred people protested at the Statehouse.

The committee approved the bill after adopting more than a dozen changes to legislation approved by the Republican-led Senate.

The full GOP-controlled House could vote Wednesday. The Senate would have to consider the changes before GOP Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sik) could sign the bill into law.

The committee's changes include removing jail time as a possible penalty for workers who unlawfully strike and clarifying that public safety workers could negotiate over equipment. The rules would apply to police, teachers, state employees and other public workers.

A similar law recently passed in Wisconsin amid a national fight over union rights.
