WAUSAU (WAOW)-- A local pro-life group says its rights were violated when the Marathon County Public Library canceled its meeting.

Organizers from "40 Days to Life" say they booked a room at the library to screen a documentary about the finances of groups providing abortions.

They say they checked with the library to make sure they had the space, and audio visual equipment.

"They never asked me what group.  They never asked me at that time what we were showing," said Janet Nichols, 40 Days for Life organizer.

But Library Director Ralph Illick says he didn't know what the meeting was about until he saw messages posted on Facebook saying people planned to protest the film.

That's when Illick canceled the meeting.

Nichols says the decision caught her off guard.

"Well I thought it was rather surprising, because the library use is paid by taxpayer funding, and he's violating his own library code, "

Marathon County Corporation Counsel Scott Corbett says the library was protecting its mission.

"Postings on Facebook apparently indicated that there might be a disturbance at the library," said Corbett.

Organizers want their meeting rescheduled in the original room, or they say they will take legal action.
