Arizona sweat lodge discussion focuses on toxins

CAMP VERDE, Ariz. (AP) -- Prosecutors trying a self-help author on manslaughter charges say the defense is doing a good job distracting the jury with talk of pesticides and toxins.

Defense attorneys for James Arthur Ray have said toxins could have contributed to the deaths of three people following a sweat lodge ceremony he led in October 2009.

They've asked witnesses about ants near the structure and doctors whether they could rule out poisoning.

Medical examiners have said that heat stroke and multisystem organ failure caused the deaths.

Ray has pleaded not guilty to manslaughter charges.

Prosecutor Sheila Polk recently directed the detective on the case to find out more about any pesticides or poisons used at the retreat where Ray held his "Spiritual Warrior" event.

A judge hasn't decided whether to allow that evidence.
