Canadian threatens Maine bus with fake detonator

Houlton, Maine (AP) -- Maine police say a Canadian national who threatened a bus with a fake detonator switch has been arrested in northern Maine, near the Canadian border.

Police say 50-year-old Daniel Thomas Maccabee surrendered just before dawn Thursday as police prepared to fire tear gas into the bus.

Police say Maccabee allegedly assaulted three women on the bus and claimed to have explosives before the bus pulled into a Houlton gas station that doubles as a bus stop.

The driver and seven passengers got out, leaving only Maccabee on the bus.

Houlton Police Chief Butch Asselin says during the nine-hour episode Maccabee claimed to have a detonator switch, which turned out to be a video game controller. Maccabee, whose last known address was in Madison, Wis., claimed he wanted asylum in Canada.
