Wis. officials say radiation level not health risk

Madison (AP) -- Wisconsin health officials say trace amounts of radiation found in the state that likely came from a damaged nuclear reactor in Japan pose no health risks.

A Department of Health Services spokesman said traces of iodine-131, a radioactive byproduct, were found in air and water samples taken throughout the state. However, the amount is too small to cause any health issues.

DHS officials believe the particles were carried to Wisconsin through rainwater in the aftermath of an earthquake and tsunami that damaged a Japan power plant. Officials say the particles have a short half-life that will allow radiation levels to return to normal soon.

Massachusetts, North Carolina, South Carolina and several Western states also have reported minuscule amounts of increased radiation.
