(WAOW) - We still have a lot of snow to get rid of before the area's spring sports athletes can get outdoors. Once they do, a pair of teams will be ready to start the seasons as defending state champs.
The Marathon baseball team has plenty of championship tradition. Several of the players are fresh off a state title run on the basketball court. Of course, they're also the defending champs on the diamond...having won their 2nd crown in 3 seasons last June. The Red Raiders say the experience from deep playoff trips in both sports can only help their confidence when this year's postseason finally rolls around.
Similarly, the Tigerton softball team will start 2011 as the defending state champions. They lost just 3 seniors from last year's team, which claimed the school's first-ever softball title. That team was extremely young...as 6 of the 9 starters return for another run this spring. Strangely enough, this year's team is also young, boasting just 1 senior. The young ladies know that last season is now in the past, but that they can fuel another run with the memories of their championship campaign.
