Four candidates vie for three school board spots in Wausau

WAUSAU (WAOW)--Four candidates are vying for three spots on the Wausau School District's school board. Despite having differing backgrounds, they all say they'll bring unique skills and experiences if elected.

Area schools are facing uncertain times, but one thing that is certain, three people will be elected to serve on the Wausau School District's school board Tuesday.

Lance Trollop, a local attorney, says he'll bring a unique set of skills if elected. "I have a background in education, I'm a product of the Wausau school district. I'm very proud of it."

Despite the budget and program cuts school officials are facing, he said, bring it on.

"I actually think that those challenges are a good reason to run, so I don't look at it as running despite those challenges I look at it as running because of those challenges."

Candidate John Ostertag says those challenges are exactly why he's running. Ostertag is a former teacher who worked in the Wausau School District for 34 years.

Robb Shepherd, a local business owner, is also banking on experience. He's hoping to serve his fourth consecutive term on the board and has already been tackling tough budget issues.

"It is a very challenging item. It is probably one of the top ten most challenging of my tenure on the board, but its not the most challenging. It's just another thing we have to deal with and we will as a community and as a board," said Shepherd.

Candidate Yvonne Henning declined an on-camera interview, but says she's running because she wants to give back.

Four candidates, four different backgrounds. All hoping to get the chance to better the lives of area children.
