State Senate passes bill to help fix state budget

MADISON (AP) -- The Wisconsin Senate has passed Republican Gov. Scott Walker's plan to fix a projected $137 million shortfall in the state budget.

It was the first piece of legislation the Senate took up after the 14 Democratic senators who fled Wisconsin in an unsuccessful attempt to block passage of an anti-union bill returned to work Tuesday.

Three Democrats even joined with 19 Republicans to pass the bill designed to fix the shortfall in the budget this year.

Portions of the bill passed had been included in the anti-union bill but were removed before Republicans passed it last month with no Democrats present.

Gov. Scott Walker has said it could save the state $165 million through refinancing of debt.

The anti-union law has not taken effect because of an ongoing court fight.
