Italian operas presented by UWSP students
The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Department of Music's Opera Workshop will offer a performance of works by Giacomo Puccini on Friday, April 8 and Saturday, April 9.
The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. at Michelsen Hall in the Noel Fine Arts Center, 1800 Portage St., Stevens Point. Music Department professors Dennis Willhoit and Susan Bender will direct the opera. Guest artist Jeffery Watson, of Washington D.C., will accompany on piano.
Tickets are $15 for adults and $12 for students and available at the University Information and Ticket Office in the Dreyfus University Center by calling 715-346-4100 or 800-838-3378. Visa, MasterCard or Discover are accepted. Tickets may also be purchased at the door if seats are available.
The fully staged production will include Puccini's "Suor Angelica" and "Gianni Schicchi," inspired by Dante Alighieri's "The Divine Comedy." Both are one-act operas that combine a mix of pride, greed, sorrow, laughter, romance and death. The majority of the performance will be in English.
Regarded as a great composer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Puccini is also the composer of "Madama Butterfly," "Turandot," "Tosca" and "La Boheme," among others.
