Outside spending in Wis. Supreme Court race: $3.6M

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Wisconsin's Supreme Court election is still unsettled, but this much is clear -- the amount that outside groups spent to influence the outcome has set a record.

Special-interest groups spent a total of $3.58 million on this year's race.  The previous record for a Wisconsin Supreme Court race was $3.38 million in 2008.  The final figures were reported Wednesday by the Brennan Center for Justice.  That's an institute at New York University's law school that tracks spending in judicial races.

The Brennan Center says the numbers are only from TV satellite data and don't include production costs and other expenses.

The top single spender was a liberal group that spent $1.4 million.  Four conservative groups combined to spend $2.2 million.
