State Republican lawmaker calls for investigation

MADISON (AP) -- A state Republican lawmaker is calling for an investigation into an email sent by an assistant attorney general offering legal advice to Democratic state senators when they were on the run in Illinois in February.

Rep. Steve Nass on Thursday called for an investigation into Department of Justice attorney Thomas Bellavia related to a Feb. 27 email he sent to Democratic Minority Leader Mark Miller and Sen. Jon Erpenbach.

Bellavia sent the email from his private account. He says he supported the Democrats in their efforts to oppose the Republican-backed bill taking away collective bargaining rights from public workers.

He proceeds to offer them advice about whether they can be arrested in Illinois and suggests they get legal advice.

Justice Department spokesman Bill Cosh had no immediate comment.
