Milwaukee man charged in beating death of toddler

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Milwaukee man once hailed for overcoming poverty and becoming the first black male valedictorian at Washington High School is charged in the beating death of a 2-year-old boy.

Twenty-six-year-old Corey Benson is charged with first-degree reckless homicide.

The criminal complaint says Benson walked into Aurora Sinai Medical Center on Saturday, carrying Karmari Curtis, who wasn't breathing. An autopsy showed the boy had multiple injuries.

Benson has been charged with abusing Karmari before. In October, the boy was hospitalized for six days because of his injuries. Benson was to have no contact with the child, but he was babysitting Saturday.

There is no attorney listed for Benson in the homicide case. The attorney who represented him in the October case did not return a message left after business hours Thursday.
