STEVENS POINT- The UW-Stevens Point softball team dropped a pair of one run games on Thursday to the eighth ranked Warhawks of UW-Whitewater, 3-2 and 2-1. It was the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) opener for the Pointers.
In the opener, the Warhawks scored the games first run in the first inning after getting a leadoff triple followed by a single to go up 1-0.
Sarah Butts answered in the third when she drove in the Pointers first run of the game with a single that scored Kelly Arndt. Butts then scored off of an #Elyse Nelson# base hit giving the Pointers a 2-1 lead.
The Pointers took the 2-1 lead into the top of the seventh but gave up a pair of runs to give the Warhawks a 3-2 lead. UW-Whitewater scored both runs with two outs in the seventh with the tying hit coming from Emily Epifanio. The Warhawks last run was unearned as they scored off the Pointer's lone error of the game.
Sara Babbits took the loss for the Pointers as she threw a complete game, giving up just two earned runs and striking out two.
Whitewater's Jessica Stang picked up the win, striking out 11, tossing a complete game and surrendering just four hits.
In game two the Pointers took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second as Collette Ullmer drove in Katie Shulfer.
The Pointers would hold that lead all the way until the sixth inning when the Warhawks answered with a run of there own to knot things up at one.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the Warhawks got the eventual winning run in the eighth inning, again scoring an unearned run off the Pointers lone error.
Michelle Jones took the loss for the Pointers as she threw all eight innings, giving up just five hits and allowing one earned run.
Stang again picked up the win for the Warhawks, throwing the 3 1/3 innings in relief of starter Katie Boyle.
Katie Krueger paced the Pointers offense with two hits in the second game.
