Budget shortfall

MARSHFIELD (WAOW) -- Governor Scott Walker says making employees pay more into their retirement and health care will make up for cuts under his proposed budget.

The League of Wisconsin Municipalities says that doesn't seem to be the case for 36 municipalities in Wisconsin.

Three of those municipalities are in our viewing area. They're Marshfield, Wisconsin Rapids, and Merrill.

Finance directors for those three cities' prepared budgets. Each budget shows a negative net effect on their general fund in 2012.

"There were a number of local officials who thought that the tools that the governor was offering would not in all likelihood cover the cuts that he was proposing," League of Wisconsin Municipalities Executive Director Dan Thompson said.

The League of Wisconsin Municipalities is a voluntary nonprofit and nonpartisan association. They say they worked with finance directors from three municipalities in our area.
