MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A Dane County sheriff's deputy involved in a high-speed chase that ended with the death of the suspect has been cleared of any criminal liability.
The Dane County District Attorney's Office says the high-speed pursuit of 20-year-old Wayne O. Stevens, Jr. lasted less than one minute and was called off just before Stevens crashed his vehicle Monday on Midvale Boulevard.
Prosecutors say Stevens lost control while traveling faster than 80 mph and struck a tree. In the debris of the crash, officers found 10 different shotguns, rifles and handguns, several of which were stolen.
Deputy James Nisius was the lead deputy in the pursuit. The crash is still being investigated, but Nisius has been cleared.
