STEVENS POINT (Press Release) – The 10th ranked UW-Stevens Point baseball team could not jump start their offense in the team's home opener against seventh-ranked UW-Whitewater as they dropped both games of the doubleheader Saturday afternoon by scores of 5-3 and 6-2.
In the first game, the Pointers took advantage of three first inning errors by the Warhawks and Dan Douglas, Eric Fritz, and Cody Koback each scored for an early 3-0 advantage.
UW-Whitewater was able to rally back in the fifth as they platted four runners, highlighted by a two RBI single by Rob Coe.
The Warhawks added one more insurance run in the eighth as Daniel Putnam drove in Dylan Friend for a 5-3 lead. Whitewater retired six of the last seven Pointers in the eighth and ninth for the victory in game one.
Koback led the way for the Pointers going three-for-four with a run scored. Scott Williams (3-2) suffered the loss going all nine innings, allowing five runs while striking out six.
Riley Tincher improved to 4-1 on the season while going the distance for Whitewater and not allowing an earned run. Putnam led the way offensively with four hits and one RBI.
In game two it was the Warhawks that jumped on the board first as Jeff Donovan plated David Cladis on a sacrifice fly in the third.
UW-Whitewater broke the game open in the seventh as they poured on five more runs capped off with a three-run home run by Donovan.
Point fought back in the bottom half of the inning as they plated two more runs to bring the game to 6-2 but could not push any more runs across resulting in the doubleheader sweep.
Sean Gerber and Douglas each added RBI for the Pointers. Joel Delorit (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season as he gave up six runs in six and two thirds innings.
Donovan pushed his record to 5-0 on the season, allowing two runs in the complete game effort.
UW-Stevens Point (9-6) will return to action tomorrow afternoon as they will face off against UW-Whitewater once again in a doubleheader, weather permitting. First pitch is set for 12 pm.
