Wal-Mart plans ad campaign to woo back shoppers

NEW YORK (AP) -- Wal-Mart is renewing its focus on low prices in a bid to win back customers.

It's launching a campaign today with the slogan "Low Prices.  Every Day.  On Everything."

Last year, Wal-Mart had strayed from its "everyday low prices," but toward the end of the year it began emphasizing low prices across the whole store, instead of heavily promoting selected items.

Chief merchandising officer Duncan MacNaughton says Wal-Mart has lost customer confidence in having the lowest price.  He says, "Our company is determined to create the best one-stop shopping experience and low prices on the right products backed by a clear, consistent ad match policy."

Wal-Mart also has been adding back thousands of products it had gotten rid of in an overzealous bid to clean up stores.  Wal-Mart Stores Inc. failed to reverse an almost two-year slide in a key revenue measure in its fourth quarter, and it faces increasing price competition from dollar chains and Amazon.com.
