Clerk won't quit after Wis. court vote debacle

Waukesha -- An embattled county clerk is refusing to resign after she failed to immediately report thousands of votes in Wisconsin's tightly contested Supreme Court race.

Waukesha County Clerk Kathy Nickolaus announced last Thursday she had failed to save 14,000 votes on her computer. The discovery of the votes flipped the unofficial winner from JoAnne Kloppenburg to incumbent Justice David Prosser.

All Wisconsin counties are expected to send their final results to the state later this week.

Waukesha County Democrats have demanded Nickolaus step down, but Nickolaus says in a statement she will serve out her term. She apologized for the error. She says she has asked state election officials and the county auditor to help improve her office's operations.
