Volunteers work to clean up Merrill despite winter weather

Merrill (WAOW)- People around the area are still hard at work recovering from the several tornadoes that struck Wisconsin earlier this week.

When John Schmidt saw the funnel cloud just a half mile from his house, he knew he needed to help. Schmidt told Newsline 9, "My house wasn't damaged and I know that there is a lot of people that did have damage, so I felt as a community member that I needed to come out here and help out my neighbors."

Over 300 volunteers joined Schmidt, despite winter weather, to clean up Merrill.  School buses spent Saturday dropping off crews at damaged homes across town.

The work will continue on Sunday. Vollunteers are asked to dress in boots and weather appropriate clothing.

Buses will run from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Location-Merrill High school.

People with special skills or special equipment are asked to call the Volunteer Center (715) 212-6409.
