Tornado damages home of former basketball star

Merrill (WAOW)- It has been a week since the tornado devastated the town of Merrill. Businesses and houses are still in ruins... including the home of a local basketball star.

Lisa and Michael Handlin were at church with their boys on Sunday, when the tornado ripped through their neighborhood... destroying their home.

Lisa, a former badger basketball star, tells Newsline 9 family and friends' support keeps them going. She says, "We are so thankful that we live in the community that we are living in, because when a devastation like this goes through a community, it's amazing how we all come together."

Her husband Michael estimates 50 people dropped by to help on Saturday. Turning the mess of fallen trees and brush into stacks of cut wood.

Handlin says, "it's very important we get our community back to what it was before. We had a beautiful spot here and it will be again with a lot of support and a lot of help from the community."

Their main concern is now their neighbors. Lisa says, "I want to make sure that other people, that may be new to the area, or don't have family in the area,  are getting the help that we have received."

The Merrill Chamber of Commerce has set up a relief fund. Click here for more information.
