Milwaukee area firefighter to run marathon in gear

Posted:

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Wisconsin firefighter will be among the tens of thousands of people running the Boston Marathon Monday. And he shouldn't be too hard to spot. James Gefke will be dressed in his firefighting gear -- helmet and all.

The Milwaukee area firefighter has been training for the marathon with 30 additional pounds of firefighting clothing. He's hoping to average about a 10-minute mile.

Gefke is running in honor of his good friend and fellow firefighter, John Harrington, who was struck and killed while biking to work at the North Shore Fire Department in 2004. Since then, Gefke, other friends and firefighters have held a memorial bike ride in May, following the route Harrington was taking to work that day.

Gefke hopes to raise awareness and funds for the memorial bike ride during his run in Boston.
