350 Kenosha teachers get layoff notices

KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) -- About 350 Kenosha public school teachers will get layoff notices because of the district's budget problems, but officials don't expect all of them will lose their jobs.

The Kenosha Unified School District is trying to close a projected $33 million budget gap for next year, created by both federal and state budget cuts and a previously-negotiated increase in staff pay.

At a special school board budget meeting Wednesday night, Assistant Superintendent of Business Sheronda Glass said it appears the district needs to reduce staffing by the equivalent of 247 full-time employees---including 212 teaching positions. Anticipated retirements are already figured in.

WGTD radio reports that following the school board meeting, discussion continued at the committee level on controversial recommendations to reduce high school graduation requirements and a cap on the number of classes that high achieving students could take. No action was taken.
