STEVENS POINT -- Stevens Point plans to build an extension to its seawall that will move some homes from a 100 year flood plain to a 500 year flood plain.
The city plans to add 18 inches to the seawall along the Wisconsin River by the NewPage plant.
The Stevens Point Planning and Zoning division says the flood plain is located roughly between Brawley St. and Wisconsin St.
If FEMA okays the cities' plans, those areas would be deemed a 500 year flood plain.
That means, homeowners with a mortgage would not be required to carry flood insurance.
"It's a great way where two different agencies, being the city and consolidated water and power, can work together to really benefit over 200 households that will save tremendously because of this and encourage a lot more real estate transactions," Stevens Point Mayor Andrew Halverson said.
A Stevens Point insurance company says flood coverage can cost about $1,000 per year.
