Pointers drop doubleheader at River Falls

RIVER FALLS – The UW-Stevens Point softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader on Thursday afternoon to the league-leading Falcons of UW-River Falls by scores of 12-3 in six innings and 9-8 in the nightcap.

Michelle Jones suffered the loss in game one, giving up seven runs, all earned, while striking out three in 4.1 innings of work. Cassie Krum pitched the final 1.1 innings in relief, scattering three hits.

Offensively in game one, the Pointers collected seven hits. Katie Schulfer had two hits including her third home run of the season and her fifth double while Elyse Nelson drove in two runs.

In game two, the Pointers put two runs on the board in the opening inning but the Falcons responded with six runs, all earned, including a three-run home run by Amanda Ryder to push back in front 6-2.

The Pointers added an unearned run in the third inning to cut the deficit to three, 6-3, but again the host Falcons responded with a three run outburst in the fourth to push their advantage to six runs.

The Pointers tacked on one run in the fifth and four in the sixth but it was not enough as UW-River Falls ended the threat and hung on for the one run victory.

Sarah Babbitts took the loss in game two, allowing nine runs, eight earned, off 10 hits while striking out four. Kimberly Liegel, Katie Krueger and Schulfer each tallied three hits in the game.

UW-Stevens Point (18-12, 3-7 WIAC) returns to action on April 25 when they head to UW-Platteville for a 4 p.m. match-up with the Pioneers.
