US diplomats question Haiti's lawmaker elections

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) -- U.S. diplomats are asking Haiti's election officials to explain how they awarded 18 seats to lawmakers in the March 20 runoff vote.

The U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince said Friday it "found no explanation for the reversals" in the final results in those races. In all except two cases, the reversals benefited the governing party.

Demonstrations erupted in the countryside after the election commission released final results giving seats to deputies who were not among the top vote-getters in preliminary results.

The results released late Wednesday confirmed that pop singer Michel Martelly won the presidency in a landslide.
