WAUSAU (WAOW)- Volunteers from around the area celebrated Earth Day this year by braving the wet weather and picking up trash.
Margaret Ghidorzi helped organize this year's community clean up. She estimates 450 people joined in... picking up trash and throwing it away.
Ghidorzi says, "We're hoping that when people see the amount of trash we're picking up, the amount of trash bags in the dumpsters we're filling, they might think twice if they see a paper blow out of their car."
That's exactly what Jacki Gessler did. Gessler and her crew spent the morning on county highway R, next to the home depot, picking up trash along the road.
Ghidorzi thinks if everyone does their part litter becomes a non issue. She adds, "So many environmental issues are so complicated... litter isn't one of them. It's 100% preventable, and there is something that everybody can do. Everybody can get out here and join us and also do it year round."
Organizers say they plan on continuing the event for years to come.
