Madison mosque relocation hits a snag

MADISON (AP) -- Neighborhood concerns have delayed a Madison mosque's relocation to nearby Sun Prairie.

Leaders of the Islamic mosque say they've outgrown their rental space on Madison's east side and have an accepted offer to purchase a building in an office park. Five buildings of business condos share 117 parking spots. Mosque board president Mohammed Ehtasham says the busiest time could be early Friday afternoon, the holiest day for Muslims. He says there could be 30 to 40 vehicles in the lot at that time.

Condo association president Dave Benforado tells the State Journal neighbors are concerned that parking and traffic from the mosque would be incompatible with the park. City approval of a conditional use permit has been delayed as a result of those concerns.
