Iraqi PM: Country needs help protecting borders

BAGHDAD (AP) -- Iraq's prime minister says the country does not need U.S. forces to protect its internal security but acknowledges that the country still lacks the money and training to protect its own borders.

But Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki also told reporters Tuesday that he does not see any regional threats to Iraq's sovereignty.

Iraqi leaders are wrestling with the question of whether to ask Washington for troops to stay in the country past the end of this year. According to an agreement signed in 2008, all of the roughly 47,000 U.S. forces must be out of Iraq by Dec. 31.

While many Iraqi leaders acknowledge privately the country's security shortcomings, it would be politically difficult for Iraq to request a troop extension.
