Record number of Latinos voted in midterms

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A new study says a record 6.6 million Latinos voted in the 2010 midterm elections, a clear sign that the fastest growing minority group will be a formidable force in upcoming elections.

The Pew Hispanic Center said in a report released Tuesday that the total is an increase from the 5.6 million Hispanics who voted in 2006.

The center said Latinos made up a greater share of the electorate. It attributed the increase to the high number of Latinos reaching voting age as well as new citizens now eligible to vote. Hispanics made up 6.9 percent of the 96.1 million voters last fall compared to 5.8 percent of 96 million in 2006.

The center says the Latino population totals 50 million and will supply new voters for several decades.
