Workforce Development Secretary visits Wisconsin Rapids

WISCONSIN RAPIDS (WAOW) -- The Workforce Development Secretary says job opportunities have increased since Governor Walker took office.

He says Job centerofwisconsin.com has about 3,000 openings for Central Wisconsin and about 30,000 for the state.

The secretary toured Ocean Spray this afternoon.

After the tour, he tells Newsline 9 the plan is to strategically market the state.

He says the technical college system, the workforce development board, and the state's fourth lowest worker compensation average cost per case are all selling points.

Perez says the state will not repeat the last eight years.

"One of the problems that has occurred in the state of Wisconsin in the past eight years is a lack of strategic planning for economic development and a lack of workforce planning at the state level," Perez said.

Perez says the state is not focused on attracting a particular industry. But, they are looking at industries such as food and beverage manufacturing, which he says are growing.
