STEVENS POINT – The UW-Stevens Point softball team closed out the home portion of their 2011 schedule on Monday afternoon with a sweep of UW-Eau Claire, winning by scores of 7-5 and 8-1. The game one victory gave the Pointers their 18th straight 20-plus win season.
The Pointers (21-15, 6-10 WIAC) close out the regular season on Tuesday, May 3 with a pair of nonconference games in DePere against St. Norbert College.
In game one, Eau Claire took a 3-0 lead before the Pointers even got to bat, but UWSP took two runs back in the home half of the first.
After Eau Claire tacked on another run in the third to take a 4-2 lead, the Pointers fought back in the home half of the inning, plating one run on a Katie Krueger fielder's choice and three more with one swing from Katie Shulfer, who's three-run shot gave the Pointers 6-4 edge.
Starter Sara Babbitts shut the Blugolds down from there, allowing just one more run by the visitors as UW-Stevens Point went on to the 7-5 victory. Babbitts went the distance for her ninth win of the season, scattering 12 hits and struck out one.
Offensively, Kelly Arndt and Sarah Butts each tallied two hits and Shulfer led the way with three RBIs.
Elyse Nelson did the damage for the Pointers in game two, hitting a three-run home run as part of a six run second inning to put the Pointers in front. The Pointers added runs in the fifth and sixth frames as they took game two 8-1.
Michelle Jones recorded the victory in game two, her eighth of the year, scattering eight hits and striking out one. Offensively, seven of the nine Pointer hitters recorded two hits while Nelson and Kim Liegel each drove in three.
