Committee to send voter ID bill to Assembly

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A state Assembly committee is expected to approve a proposal Tuesday that requires voters to show photo identification at the polls.

The Assembly's committee on election and campaign reform has scheduled the vote on the bill, which would send it to the full Assembly for consideration perhaps as soon as next week.

The photo ID requirement called for under the bill would take effect in 2012.

Republican Gov. Scott Walker is supportive of the proposal, which has been backed by Republicans for years as something they say will combat voter fraud.  But Democratic detractors say the real goal is to discourage students, the elderly and poor people from voting.

Lawmakers are also expected to move the fall primary from September to the second week in August.
