Pet Pause: Dolores answers your questions

PET PAUSE (WAOW) -- At the end of every Pet Pause we encourage you to e-mail Dolores with any questions whether it be about getting a pet or taking care of one you already have.

Karen in Mosinee asked: "I just got my first kitten and my friend thought I should let her have a litter before I get her spayed.  What should I do?"

Dolores' answer: "The first thing you should do is get kitty to the Veterinarian for a checkup and shots (if needed).  I'm sure your Vet will also tell you that getting her spayed without going thru birth is the best and healthiest plan for her.  Without spaying at all she runs the risk of female cancer and years of possibly many unwanted kittens."

Sue asked: "We will be going away on a trip and for the first time are considering an at home sitter for our dog.  What are some of the things we should do?"

Dolores' answer: If you do not know the sitter, get references or referrals.

Put EVERYTHING down in writing, giving a copy to your sitter, your Vet, your neighbor and one at your home in plain site.

On your list put---

1. Your departure and return

2. Your cell phone, email, hotel or home you will be at.

3. Feeding schedule-exact details, time, what bowl, where food is at, how often to change water.

4. Medical information -Vet's name, phone number how to get there or the 24hr emergency, allergies.

5. Specific command words you use.

6. House rules-When do you permit snacks, is puppy allowed on the bed?

7. Neighbor's name and phone number is case sitter has an emergency.

8. Specific behavioral concerns-does your dog make a rush for any open doors or get very possessive of certain toys?  Do you need to keep a small light on at night?

Don in Wausau asked: "What kind of litter box should I get for my male cat who sometimes stands up while urinating?  He doesn't like the covered boxes."

Dolores answer: "Get a plastic storage container.  First, measure the height of your cat's back as he is standing.  Then you can get the correct height box so he doesn't over shoot."
