WAUSAU (Press Release) — After bringing some much-needed relief to a depleted Woodchucks' bullpen in the final weeks of the 2010 season, Ryan Iverson, a dominating closer at the University of Wisconsin- Stevens Point, recently signed on for a full season of ‘Chucks baseball.
A 5-foot-11, 190 pound junior for the WIAC regular season champion Pointers, 30—8, Iverson has thus far made 16 appearances out of the bullpen, while making six starts and nine appearances in the field.
After getting his feet wet in Northwoods league ball, appearing in five games down the stretch for the ‘Chucks last season, Iverson has absolutely torn up the WIAC baseball scene, and was virtually unhittable in the regular season.
Posting a 1.36 ERA through 33 innings pitched, the 4—0 Iverson recently set a school record for saves in a season with nine. Striking out 25 and surrendering only 12 walks and three extra-base hits on the spring, Iverson has kept his opponents' batting average to a meager .175 mark.
An Eau Claire, WIS., native, the social work major earned 10 letters in baseball, football and hockey at North high school.
After falling short in the NCAA Division III World Series in 2010, the streaking Pointers, who have won 20 of their last 22 and 11 straight, appear poised to make an encore run.
Keep an eye on Iverson and the Pointers, as they begin WIAC tournament play on Friday, May 13, and begin NCAA regional play Wednesday, May 18.
