Officials: Ex-general to run for Senate in Texas

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Former Lt. Gen. Ricardo Sanchez, who oversaw coalition forces in Iraq before retiring in the aftermath of the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal, is running for the Senate in Texas as a Democrat.

Two Democratic sources say Sanchez will announce his run Wednesday on Facebook and then file paperwork in San Antonio. The sources would speak only on condition of anonymity ahead of the announcement.

The 59-year-old Sanchez is from Rio Grande Valley and lives in San Antonio.

He is the only Democrat to declare for the race to replace outgoing Republican Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison. Republicans expect a crowded primary on their side.

Sanchez was exonerated of wrongdoing in an Army report about Abu Ghraib but has said the scandal effectively forced him to retire.
