Police probe possible confession in Depies case

MENASHA, Wis. (AP) -- Police say a convicted child kidnapper has admitted involvement in the 1992 disappearance of Laurie Depies.

Menasha police tell the Appleton Post-Crescent (http://bit.ly/m4lVOr) that the suspect told police in November that he encountered the 20-year-old in 1992 while she was working at Fox River Mall, followed her car to Menasha and lured her into his van.

Menasha police Lt. Mike Krueger didn't reveal what the suspect says happened next, but he says the man had information that's never been publicized.

Menasha police Chief Rod McCants says police now have a person who admits involvement, and authorities are trying to corroborate the information.

McCants says police don't have enough to seek charges yet. There have been false confessions in the past, and police can't dismiss that possibility again. But they say they now have a prime suspect.
