LUMBINI, Nepal (AP) -- Thousands of devotees are celebrating the anniversary of Buddha's birth at a temple in southwestern Nepal.
Police say they expect up to 50,000 people to visit the forested Mayadevi temple, built where Buddha is believed to have been born 2,555 years ago. Devotees chanted sutras and offered fruits and flowers.
Followers believe Buddha was born as a prince but left his family and kingdom to meditate in the jungles of Nepal and India before achieving enlightenment.
His birthday is also observed in Nepal as the anniversary of his enlightenment.
