RACINE, Wis. (AP) -- A World War II veteran from Racine died last week, but not before a neighbor gave him a Memorial Day gift befitting the aging U.S. Marine.
Emil Cikel joined the Marines in 1943 and served in the Pacific.
His neighbor, Mike Britson, wanted to say thank you. So when he won an American flag that had been flown over the U.S. Capitol, he knew who should get it.
Britson won the flag in a drawing last summer and wanted to wait until the right time to present it, perhaps Memorial Day. But when he saw the 88-year-old in low spirits on May 22 he decided not to wait.
He says Cikel "had a smile from ear to ear."
According to reports, the Marine died four days later.
