On the strength of three home runs the Wisconsin Rapids Rafters held their first lead of the season, but two late runs by the Battle Creek Bombers tied it and two more in extras won it for the Bombers, 8-6 Saturday night.
Down 2-0 after the first inning, the Rafters scored a single run when Jordan Tackett hit a solo home run to left. The next inning, after a walk and a single, Evan Stermer came to the plate and blasted his first home run of the season deep over the right field wall.
With a 5-2 lead in his pocket, Rafters starter Jacob Doyle set down six of the next seven batters he faced headed into the seventh. Trouble waited for Doyle as he surrendered a one out home run to Bombers first baseman Ryne Otis. After inducing a fly out, a single chased Doyle from the game. That run eventually came home to score, leaving Doyle with six and two thirds innings pitched, four runs allowed, no walks and eight strike-outs.
Stermer, the offensive hero, took to the mound in the eighth inning. A hit batter, unsuccessful run-down on the bases and two more hits eventually resulted in two runs tying the score at 6-6. The lefty from North Florida limited the damage and kept the Bombers scoreless until the tenth when a bad hop grounder caromed off of Bobby Martin at short-stop and opened the door for the eventual winning runs to score, giving the Bombers the 8-6 victory and a 3-1 record. The loss drops the Rafters to 0-4 on the season.
