Lack of fire hydrants have residents burning up

Weston, WI (WAOW)--  As soon as emergency responders got the call, firefighters knew they needed water tankers, and fast!

That's because they know this area doesn't have any fire hydrants.  But that doesn't mean there is a cause for concern.

Weston Fire Chief Steve Meilahn says, "There is no reason to panic. We had tankers coming and we make sure its up and running."

Dean Zuleger, Weston Village Administrator says the lack of fire hydrants really lies in the hands of the residents.

"The Callon neighborhood has consistently voted not to have sewer and water installed," Zuleger says.

Overwhelmingly, 70 percent of neighbors voted "no" to include water services because it is too costly.

But firefighters say a lack of hydrants did not affect the property lost at this home.

And in this tough time, neighbors are doing all they can to help rebuild.  Amy Richardson, neighbor and friend set up a fund to help the family who lost everything.

And they are asking the community to help as well.

"Anything you can do to help is better than nothing," Richardson says.

So out of all this charred rubble, the family can find a little hope.
