ADAMS COUNTY (WAOW)--According to the Adams County Sheriff's Department, a military plane crashed near New Chester in Adams County.

The Madison-based 115th Fighter Wing of the Wisconsin Air National Guard pilot was flying an F-16 fighter jet during a routine training exercise over Adams County. Air National Guard Authorities say the pilot ejected around 1:20 p.m. over the town of New Chester.

Military officials say the pilot is safe, and that he was "talking and coherent" following the crash. The pilot is being medically evaluated.

Emergency officials evacuated about 50 residents from their homes. They took shelter at the New Chester Town Hall. A military spokeswoman told Newsline 9 the priority of rescue workers would be to help those people return to their homes.
